Roadside Stops

I’ve always wanted to stop and photograph this cabin in Indian Canyon. Last week I did. All shots with the great Ricoh GR.

Rich Tone Monochrome Black and White

Rich Tone Monochrome Black and White strayfoto

I ordered the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX20 a while back because I needed a camera that could stand up to dust and wind and all the good stuff that comes from working outdoors all the time. It was on sale, and photo quality was a secondary concern. I’ve been playing with it for a few months now though, and there are some settings that are intriguing. Not mind-blowing, not killer image settings, but settings that sound purely consumer oriented that I kind of like to use. One is called “rich tone monochrome”. Without reading about it in the manual (Heaven forbid!) I think it takes 3 images and mashes them together in one, in-camera HDR image, but in black and white. It’s an idiot mode for sure. It has the potential to make some interesting images though. I’ve been too busy with work lately to do much more than a quick post, but here’s some heavy equipment shot with the “rich tone monochrome” settings applied. Some of the shots show a little noise or grain, if you can call it that, but it’s not, to my eye, objectionable. All shots are straight out of the camera, only cropped for size. On a side note, the video feature of the camera is pretty darn good, and I find myself using it much more often than I anticipated.

Topo Designs Travel Bag and Trip Pack

Topo Designs Travel Bag and Trip Pack Unboxing and Overview

New Updated Video of the Topo Designs Travel Bag

A quick video of the unboxing and initial exploration of of the Topo Designs Travel Bag and Trip Pack. One of my favorite bags to this point – a bag I’ve schlepped across most of the U.S, South and Central America, and a large portion of Europe is the Patagonia MLC. It’s been a great bag and holds enough stuff to get by, but not enough to weigh you down. After having and using both the Topo Designs Daypack and Mountain bag, I’ve been impressed enough to want a few more. I sold several courier bags, a laptop bag (Timbuk2 and Patagonia both), and even a Topo Designs Duffel to get the new travel pack and trip bag. Although I like the Patagonia bags, I really like that the Topo Designs Bags are made in the U.S.A.  – enough that I’m willing to pay a premium for them. That, and the ones I already own have aged well, held up admirably, and they come out of the wash looking almost new.

I like the size of the larger travel bag. It’s about the same size as the Patagonia MLC I was so familiar with, and it fits about the same amount of stuff. I can pack enough clothes for a week and a little extra. My initial impression of the trip pack is that it’s a tad small. It’s really cool that it attaches to the front of the travel bag, although I can’t really see when I’ll use that. Maybe it’s a little gimmicky, but it’s a gimmick I can get behind. I love a good system. I can fit a water bottle, a very small jacket and only two small cameras in it. I suppose that’s enough for most adventures, but I like to pack a little heavy – journals, and assortment of pens, some pliers, etc. Maybe the trip pack will force me to lighten my load a little, which couldn’t really hurt. I’ll try to take some more photos of the bags as I use them and I’ll revisit some of my first impressions in a later post.

Ricoh GR High ISO Shots

I’m really beginning to enjoy the Ricoh GR high ISO capabilities. I’ve been using the new Ricoh GR now for a month or so, and it continues to impress me. It’s quick to focus and the high ISO images are much better than the Ricoh GRDIV. I always added grain to the tune of 40, 40, 40 in Adobe Camera Raw (amount, size and roughness) with the GRDIV, and I quit doing that around ISO 1600 in the IV. Now with the Ricoh GR I have to add some grain and grit to get the same feel even at 6400. The new sensor is pretty smooth.

Thrift shopping in Moab is always an adventure. It seems like there couldn’t be too much turnover in a small town, but there actually is. Lots of good stuff to find. The old Memory Lane store seems to be under new ownership; it’s called the “Three Sisters Thrift“, and while it’s still a little dark, it’s much cleaner and nicer than it was before. I even noticed a computer at the counter! A real step up from the old Memory Lane days.

These photos should demonstrate to a degree the Ricoh GR High ISO ability. All of these photos are taken with the new Ricoh GR shot in manual mode at ISO 6400. I’ve processed them the way I normally do, with a little curves adjustment and a little added grain. I think the new Ricoh really is a decent step up from the GRDIV, but it’s still essentially the same camera – just better. A real pleasure to shoot with.

Arches National Park with the new Ricoh GR

Arches National Park with the new Ricoh GR

I recently hit Arches National Park near Moab with the new Ricoh GR. It’s a great little camera. I really am starting to like it better than the GRD IV I had before. I’ve noticed one the replacement batteries I bought for the Ricoh GRD IV, while it works fine in the IV, it won’t fit in the GR – the battery cover door won’t close all the way.

DIY Sandals – A follow-up

DIY Sandals – A follow-up two weeks and dozens of miles later…

DIY Sandals

A couple weeks ago I wrote a post about how to make your own shoes (sandals). At first I didn’t think much of mine. I had to wear them for a few days and then trim a little excess off the outside edge. After I did that they fit much better, and were more comfortable. I took them on a river trip through Cataract Canyon (I guide for Tour West in the summer) and wore them most of the trip – at least when I wasn’t in the water.

DIY Sandals

I don’t think they’re very well-suited for a lot of wet-water use, but that’s okay. I used them on a fairly long and rugged hike to the Doll’s House in Canyonlands, about 3 miles of rugged trail with a steep climb and some sandy sections. They performed better than I’d hoped. By the time we started the hike on day 2 of the trip I’d been wearing them for almost two weeks and they’d broken in quite well.

DIY Sandals

I worked on the original lacing method a few times and modified it slightly. I ended up making them too tight a couple times and realized that suffering through the tightness was key – once they loosened up they were perfect.

DIY Sandals

Even after being told by me buddy that “Jesus called – he wants his shoes back” these have turned out to be very comfortable, and they’ve become real easy to slip on and run around in. I kind of made this as a test pair, thinking the next pair would have thicker leather for the sole. After hiking a couple miles over rough terrain my feet were slightly tender. I think a thicker leather sole would help prevent that to some degree. I hesitate to make another pair too soon though – these have become comfortable enough I think I’ll wear them until they get a hole – despite the jokes. I worried about traction a little, but the only time I slipped at all was on a smooth, sand-covered rock. It takes a little adjustment to your gait – more like walking barefoot. Luckily I’m pretty used to that.

Using the new Ricoh GR – more shots and thoughts

Using the new Ricoh GR – more shots and thoughts

UPDATE – Sorry about the lack of images – Imgembed folded and stopped hosting images. I still love the Ricoh GR and it continues to be one of my main cameras. I use it almost daily. Check out tons of Ricoh GR and now GRII images on my Tumblr, my Flickr, and if you “like” my strayfoto Facebook page you’ll see I usually post a photo a day. Thanks -Quinn.

I’ve been shooting and playing around with the new Ricoh GR since I got it last Friday. I’ve noticed a few things about it – mainly the way it contrasts with the Ricoh GRD IV. The GRD IV didn’t focus slow and it rarely hunted other than in very low light. The new GR blows it away in practical use. It’s speedier to use all around. I wrote before I didn’t think it turned on much quicker, but in real-world, day-to-day use I was wrong. It’s noticeably quicker to turn on and much faster to turn off.

I recently drove slowly from Vernal to Moab and since I had the new GR with me I took some shots along the way. These are processed the way I normally would handle a file from the GRD IV – shot in raw, tweaked and converted in Adobe Camera Raw. The files are easy to work with.

In color, the settings in ACR require a little different treatment. While I felt I could select “auto white balance” 90% of the time with the DNG’s from the GRD IV, selecting the same and applying it to the GR files results in a much warmer color than a I was used to with the GRD IV files. I’ve found it’s better to select “as shot” or to manually adjust the temperature balance with the GR. The only difference in the two images below is the white balance selection in Camera Raw. I have no idea how it will display on myriad screens, but it’s dramatic. And actually, I’d choose some sort of manual setting that’s somewhere in the middle I suppose.

As you can see, the “auto” setting produces files that are noticeable warmer than “as shot”. It’s not really a big deal but it’s much different than what I was used to doing with the GRD IV.

If you’ve driven south along the 191 you’ve probably photographed this sign.

Thanks for looking. I’ll be on the river again this week, and hopefully I’ve have more river shots and some video of the pathetic low water rapids we’re plagued with this year.

Thanks for looking. _____________________________________________________________________
